Sophie Kälin, a native of New Jersey in the USA, started playing the cello in 1996 at the age of 5. Sophie studied under the direction of teachers including Marnie Kaller, Irene Sharp, Clara Kim, Astrid Schween, Alberto Parinni and Michael Reynolds. At age 13, Sophie attended Juilliard`s Pre-College Division in New York City. In 2009, Sophie graduated high school from the the Walnut Hill School of the Arts in Natick, Massachusetts. During her time at the school, she was also a student at the New England Conservatory of Music`s Pre-College Division. Sophie has been a student at summer music festivals such as Boston University`s Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) and the Kinhaven Music School in Vermont.
In 2013, Sophie graduated with a Bachelor`s Degree in Cello Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston under the direction of Natasha Brofsky. After graduating, she worked for an El Sistema-inspired program with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra between 2013-2016. Sophie has continued her time at the Kinhaven Music School as a staff member of the Junior Session since 2009. Since moving to Basel, Switzerland in 2017 Sophie has worked for the Kammerorchester Basel in the Communications Department and has been a member of the ICMS Basel faculty since 2019.
In her free time, Sophie enjoys hiking, gardening and knitting. She resides in Basel with her husband, Gregor and her cat, Gustav.
